Common Cardiovascular Abbreviations

Below is a list of common abbreviations and terms used in cardiovascular medicine and surgery. Clicking on any of the underlined terms will take you to longer descriptions.

AAA - abdominal aortic aneurysm
ABG - arterial blood gas
AMI - acute myocardial infarction
ASD - atrial septal defect
ASHD - arteriosclerotic heart disease
ASO - arteriosclerosis obliterans
AV - atrioventricular
BPM - beats per minute
CAD - coronary artery disease
CCU - coronary care unit
CHF - congestive heart failure
COU - coronary observation unit
CPK - creatinine phosphokinase
CPR - cardiopulmonary resuscitation
CVA - cerebrovascular accident
CVP - central venous pressure
EKG - electrocardiogram
HDL - high density lipoprotein
IAPB - intra-aortic balloon pump
ICU - intensive care unit
IHSS - idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis
LAD - left anterior descending coronary artery
LAP - left atrial pressure
LC - left circumflex artery
LCA - left coronary artery
LDH - lactic dehydrogenase
LM - left main
LVEDP - left ventricular end-diastolic pressure
MCL - midclavicular line
PA - pulmonary arterial (line)
PAC - premature atrial contractions
PAP - pulmonary arterial pressure
PAT - paroxysmal atrial tachycardia
PCO2 - partial pressure of carbon dioxide
PDA - patent ductus arteriosus
PMI - point of maximal impulse
PO2 - partial pressure of oxygen
PTT - partial thromboplastin time
PVC - premature ventricular contractions
PWP - pulmonary wedge pressure
RCA - right coronary artery
RHD - rheumatic heart disease
SA - sinoatrial
SBE - subacute bacterial endocarditis
SGOT - serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase
VSD - ventricular septal defect
