The Heart Institute
Pediatric Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery
at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA)

The heart with callouts to the superior vena cava, aorta, and pulmonary vein.

USC Cardiothoracic Surgeons offer a complete spectrum of care for pediatric cardiac and thoracic disease. Treatment and consultation for children with heart and lung disease takes place at the Heart Institute at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).

Scope of Programs

USC Cardiothoracic Surgeons are specialists in the care of children. Areas of specialty include neonatal cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, thoracic surgery and heart and lung transplantation.

About the Heart Institute

The Heart Institute is setting the standard for care of children with congenital and acquired cardiovascular disease. In 1939, the West Coast’s first pediatric heart surgery was performed at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, and we have continued our history of leadership. Today, the Heart Institute is the largest pediatric cardiovascular center in the West and a global referral center, receiving patients from across the nation and the world.

Our mission is to further the understanding, treatment, and survival of children with heart and lung disease through an integrated system of clinical care, education, and clinical and basic research.

Within this comprehensive program, we provide diagnosis, consultation, treatment, and ongoing management for children of all ages – from fetus to young adult – along with support services for families. Virtually every advanced modality available is offered within our five divisions: Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Cardiothoracic Transplantation, Cardiothoracic Intensive Care and Cardiac Research. More than 800 patients undergo cardiac surgery here annually, while another 5,000 patients receive non-invasive and invasive cardiology procedures.

The Heart Institute is headed by Dr. Vaughn Starnes, one of the world's foremost pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, and chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at USC.

Cardiac Research

In spite of the advances made in pediatric cardiac disease, much remains to be done. About 32,000 infants are born each year in the United States with congenital cardiovascular defects; others acquire such conditions after birth.

Physician-scientists at the Heart Institute are engaged in research to improve the odds of transplantation success, advance the capabilities of imaging, refine treatments for Kawasaki Syndrome, and develop new medications for primary pulmonary hypertension, among other topics. The Institute works to forge a strong link between clinical care and basic research, so that the best ideas can reach patients’ bedsides as quickly as possible.
