About USC Cardiothoracic Surgery

Patient Centered

All the knowledge and expertise in the world is worth nothing if the care is not delivered with compassion and empathy. Members of the USC Cardiothoracic Surgeons intimately understand the stress and worry that go hand-in-hand with cardiothoracic conditions. These consuming emotions not only affect the patient, but envelop families as well.

We believe education and open communication, along with a compassionate approach to care, can help alleviate some of this worry and concern. Patient coordinators serve as "point people" to ensure that our patients and families are in constant contact with us, and that all questions are answered. Although our practice is university-based, its values are grounded in traditional doctor-to-patient care -- providing personalized service every day of the week.

This patient-centered approach to medicine has earned high marks from our patients. Patient feedback consistently indicates an appreciation not only of our skill but of our bedside manner as well. In an era of depersonalized medicine, we have maintained a highly personalized practice.

In our practice, patients are treated as individuals. Calls are returned promptly, questions are answered thoroughly, and families are treated as partners with the patient and surgeon to ensure optimal care is being delivered according to the patient’s wishes. The expanding number of treatment approaches calls for more decision-making, and patients are key to this process. To enhance this individualized approach, members of the USC Cardiothoracic Surgeons meet on a weekly basis to discuss each patient’s case. This "brainstorming" and coordination of care help ensure that patients have access to the most appropriate treatment option for their specific condition and health status.
