Stanols and Sterols
Stanols and sterols are made by plants and have chemical structures similar to cholesterol. Plant stanols and sterols are poorly absorbed by the body and may help lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. They occur naturally in some seeds, nuts, plant oils and whole grains. Stanols and sterols are sometimes added to foods and  beverages such as margarines and juices.
